MEMORANDUM

Subject: “National Cancer Prevention Month” in Pennsylvania

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution designating February 2015 as “National Cancer Prevention Month” in Pennsylvania.

In the past couple of years, the United States has achieved great progress in the fight against cancer. Research and medical advances have opened new opportunities for cancer prevention research, giving increased optimism for effective cancer control. Nevertheless, cancer remains the second leading cause of death in the United States and more cases continue to be diagnosed, according to a study conducted by Oxford University. In fact, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, during 2014, a total of 79,920 new invasive cancer cases were diagnosed among Pennsylvania residents and reported to the Pennsylvania Cancer Registry.

The purpose of Cancer Prevention Month is to raise awareness about the need to expand our knowledge regarding cancer and re-evaluate many misconceptions we face about the disease. Among these misconceptions is that there is nothing we can do to prevent cancer. As a matter of fact, according to a recent survey conducted by the American Institute of Cancer Research (AICR), almost half of all Americans do not know that there are steps we can take today that can help prevent many cancers in the future. Eating healthy, being active, and staying lean are only some of the things we can do to prevent cancer. In addition, screening offers the ability for secondary prevention by detecting cancer early, before symptoms appear. Early detection usually results in less extensive treatment and better outcomes.

Please join me by co-sponsoring this resolution as we continue to draw attention to the fact that solutions do exist across the continuum of cancer and that they are within the reach of the citizens of this Commonwealth.
