Subject: | Establishing an Antlerless Deer Harvest Committee |
In the near future, I will be introducing legislation that would increase the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s (PGC) focus on serving the interests of sportsmen in this Commonwealth. The bill would also provide inclusion of hunters in decisions related to the management of whitetail deer. Under my legislation, the commission would focus primarily on serving the interests of sportsmen by maximizing the sustainable harvest of the white tail deer herd. Currently, the PGC determines antlerless deer allocations with minimal public involvement. My proposal aims to rectify this by creating an Antlerless Deer Harvest Committee that would consist of licensed hunters appointed by the Board of Commissioners, the President pro tempore and Minority leader of the Senate, and the Speaker and Minority leader of the House. Duties of the committee would include determining total antlerless deer licenses allocated for each wildlife management unit. They would review and accept this information, or propose their own allocation recommendations. Sportsmen are the primary means used by the PGC to manage game. It is imperative that we ensure their interests are being served and prioritized by the PGC. Providing for their involvement in the management of our wildlife resources is the key to keeping the PGC accountable and keeping our sportsmen aware and engaged in decisions that impact them. I hope you will join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation. If you have any questions, please contact Lynette Perkins via e-mail at LMPerkins@pahouse.net or via phone at 717-772-2283. |
