Subject: | Resolution Designating April 15, 2015 as "Jackie Robinson Day" |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution honoring the lifetime achievements and lasting influence of Jackie Robinson. April 15, 2015 will mark the 68th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the major league baseball color barrier. On April 15, 1947, Robinson became the first African American to play for a major league baseball team, being named Rookie of the Year. Over the course of his career, he also earned recognition as the first African American to win a batting title, lead the league in stolen bases, play in an all-Star game, play in the World Series, win a MVP award, and be elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. To honor his achievements, Major League Baseball retired his number, #42. This resolution would set aside April 15, 2015 as “Jackie Robinson Day” to honor his lifetime achievements and lasting influence. |
