| Subject: | Resolution: Medical Physicist Awareness Month (March 2015) |
The month of March is traditionally designated as "Medical Physicist Awareness and Appreciation Month" in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The general public typically has no knowledge of the profession of medical physicists or the incredibly important and sensitive job that a medical physicist performs. The essential responsibility of the Qualified Medical Physicist’s clinical practice is to assure the safe and effective delivery of radiation to achieve a diagnostic or therapeutic result as prescribed inpatient care. The medical physicist performs or supervises the pertinent procedures necessary to achieve this objective. The proposed resolution seeks to enhance public awareness of the field of medical physics. Medical physicists are integral in the treatment of potentially fatal conditions that require radiation treatment such as cancer. This resolution will help to inform the public about a field of medicine that is largely unknown to patients despite the crucial role medical physicists’ play in a patient’s radiation treatment.
