Subject: Resolution Recognizing March 2015 as “National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing the month of March 2015 as “National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania.

According to the Prevent Cancer Foundation, colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among men and women in the United States. Although the number of new cases was estimated at 136,830 in 2014, mortality rates for colorectal cancer have actually decreased over the past two decades, due in part to improvements in early detection and treatment. If everyone 50 years of age or older would have regular colorectal cancer screening tests, at least 6 out of 10 colorectal cancer deaths could be prevented each year.

Since 2000, March has been designated as “National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month” by the Prevent Cancer Foundation, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable and the Foundation for Digestive Health and Nutrition. The purpose of this designation is to generate awareness of colorectal cancer and its symptoms and to encourage people to learn more about how to prevent the disease through a healthy lifestyle, diet and regular screenings.

Please join me in raising awareness of this horrible disease and promoting preventive measures.
