MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 2, 2015 10:30 AM
From: Representative Vanessa Lowery Brown
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution Designating the Month of February 2015 as Black History Month

In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution designating the month of February 2015 as Black History Month in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

As many of you may be aware, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), was established on September 9, 1915 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson (known as the Father of Black History), for the express purpose of instituting and promoting the observance of Black History Month in our nation.

The ASALH plays an integral role in highlighting the innumerable accomplishments and achievements of blacks by continuing to undertake the vitally important task of promoting, researching, preserving, and disseminating information about black life, history and culture to the global community. Additionally, this esteemed organization is responsible for establishing the annual theme for Black History Month, which this year will be “A Century of Black Life, History, and Culture.”

"Black History Month" is an opportunity for all Americans to commemorate the various struggles and victories of African-Americans throughout the history of this great country. I would like to take this opportunity to implore my colleagues to please join me in designating the month of February 2015 as Black History Month in Pennsylvania.
