Subject: | Designating the Week of April 19 through 25, 2015, as “Crime Victims’ Rights Week” in Pennsylvania |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution designating the week of April 19 through April 25, 2015, as “Crime Victims’ Rights Week” in Pennsylvania. Each year approximately 23 million Americans are victimized by crime, and 6.1 million are victims of violent crime. The millions of survivors of crime and their families are no less deserving of justice, rights, resources, restoration and rehabilitation than the violent offenders who victimize them. The citizens of Pennsylvania realize that we can make our homes, neighborhoods, and communities safer and stronger by serving victims of crime and ensuring justice for all. The United States Department of Justice’s Office for Victims of Crime was established to enhance the capacity to assist crime victims and to promote justice and healing for all victims of crimes. For many years, the Office for Victims of Crime has helped lead communities throughout the country in their observance of “National Crime Victims’ Rights Week,” helping to boost public awareness about the challenges presented to victims of crime and celebrating the hard-won progress in victims’ rights and services. Concerned citizens, victim service providers, and criminal justice officials are joining together across the nation to recognize “National Crime Victims’ Rights Week,” which will be observed April 19 through 25, 2015. Please join me in recognizing the observance of “Crime Victims’ Rights Week” and in supporting victims of crime throughout this Commonwealth and the nation. Thank you in advance for your consideration. |
