MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 29, 2015 02:44 PM
From: Representative Jake Wheatley, Jr.
To: All House members
Subject: June 7, 2015, as “National Cancer Survivors Day” in Pennsylvania.

In the near future, I plan on introducing a resolution recognizing June 7, 2015, as “National Cancer Survivors Day” in Pennsylvania.

First celebrated in 1987, this year marks the 28th year that the National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation has designated the first Sunday in June as “National Cancer Survivors Day.” This day provides an annual opportunity to pause and honor the 14.5 million Americans who are living with a history of cancer for their strength and courage. It is also a day for cancer survivors to connect with each other, celebrate milestones and acknowledge the contributions of their families, friends, and healthcare providers.

An estimated 1.6 million new cancer cases will be diagnosed this year in the United States. Unfortunately, these newly diagnosed individuals will face many of the same challenges experienced by those now classified as survivors such as limited access to cancer specialists and promising new treatments, denial of health insurance and life insurance coverage, difficulty finding jobs, as well as the financial strains resulting from treatment. To this extent, increased access to quality cancer care, screening and prevention must continue to be a priority within the Commonwealth.

Please consider joining me in recognizing the strength and persistence of these courageous survivors by designating June 7, 2015, as “National Cancer Survivors Day” in Pennsylvania.
