MEMORANDUM

To: All House members
Subject: Resolution Commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW)

In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution commemorating the 60th anniversary of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). It is my sincere hope you will join me in this effort.

As we all know, social workers are an essential part of our communities. These tireless professionals help people solve and cope with a wide-range of problems and stressful situations in their everyday lives, from adopting a child, to responding to crisis situations such as child abuse, to navigating a terminal illness diagnosis. Given the wide range of tasks undertaken by social workers, they can be employed in a variety of settings, including mental health clinics, schools, and hospitals. Social workers have been on the front lines of every major social change in the United States since the late 19th Century and continue to be in high demand across this country. In fact, between 2012 and 2022, employment of social workers is expected to grow 19 percent.

NASW was established in 1955 after the consolidation of seven social work organizations. The group’s primary functions include promoting the professional development of its members, establishing and maintaining professional standards of practice, advancing sound social policies, and providing services that protect its members and enhance social workers’ professional status. As part of these efforts, NASW has fought for the past six decades to ensure the equal treatment of all individuals as evidenced by their advocacy for passage of both the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009. The organization’s members played a crucial role in the aftermath of September 11, 2001, providing exceptional mental health care services to thousands across the United States.

This year, NASW will celebrate another milestone, the organization’s 60th anniversary. NASW has proven an invaluable asset to our schools, hospitals, human service agencies, and local governments. Considering this, I invite all members to co-sponsor this important legislation.
