MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 20, 2015 03:09 PM
From: Representative Patrick J. Harkins
To: All House members
Subject: Co-Sponsorship - Legislation further providing for payment of salaries in cases of sickness, injury or death

In the near future, I am planning to introduce legislation to include “grandchildren” among those “near relatives” for whom school employees may be eligible to take bereavement leave.

Currently, the Public School Code allows that professional employees or temporary professional employees may be absent from work and take bereavement leave for the death of a “near relative,” which is defined as a grandfather, grandmother, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, brother-in-law or sister-in-law. However, “grandchild” is glaringly absent from this list.

Introduced as HB982
