Subject: | Retirement Compensation for Third Class City Officers and Employees (Former HB517) |
In the near future, I will be re-introducing House Bill 517 from the 2011-2012 legislative session, which permits third class cities to provide for increases to retirement compensation. My proposal amends Act 362 of 1945, which authorizes third class cities to establish an optional retirement system for certain employees. As introduced, my bill will require the Officers and Employees Retirement Board of a third class city to increase the compensation of retired officers and employees based on the Consumer Price Index. Under current law, these compensation increases are optional and made at the discretion of the board. I believe it is essential to ensure that retirees, many of whom live on fixed incomes, are able to keep up with increases in prescription drug prices and other cost-of-living increases.
