MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 16, 2015 04:03 PM
From: Representative Pam Snyder
To: All House members
Subject: Legislation designating a bridge in Greene County on State Route 88 over Muddy Creek as the Army Corporal Richard W. Kowalewski, Jr. Memorial Bridge

In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation designating the Bridge in Greene County, located on SR 88, section Q10 Segment 0300/0000, structure number S-31843, over Muddy Creek as the Army Cpl. Richard W. Kowalewski, Jr. Memorial Bridge.

Cpl. Kowalewski was born in in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania on March 31, 1973. He enlisted in the United States Army and completed basic training in June 1992. As part of a United Nations peace keeping operation, Cpl. Kowalewski was deployed to Somalia in August 1993.

Cpl. Kowalewski’s life tragically ended during a violent encounter in Mogadishu, Somalia. During the battle, a large group of militants armed with automatic weapons and rocket propelled grenades ambushed Cpl. Kowalewski’s convoy while in route to rescue downed pilots of a Black Hawk helicopter.

The encounter has been described as one of our country’s most violent fire fights since Vietnam. The battle was later depicted in the famous novel and movie “Black Hawk Down”.

Please join me in supporting this legislation.
