Subject: | Legislator Financial Interest Act (Former House Bill 1979 of 2013-14) |
In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation, former House Bill 1979, Printer’s Number 2919, which will establish the Legislator Financial Interest Act. Under current Pennsylvania law, members of the General Assembly are prohibited from having financial interests in a variety of entities that receive funds from the Commonwealth. These checks were established to ensure the fair and equal representation of all interests brought before the House and Senate. As we prepare for the 2015-16 Legislative Session, it is likely the debate over school choice will continue in both chambers and the funneling of additional tax dollars, in the form of vouchers, to private and charter schools will be a major issue. As such, I believe that members of the General Assembly should be prohibited from having financial interests in charter schools, private schools, and businesses or nonprofit corporations that manage a school that receives an appropriation of funds from the Commonwealth. It is our duty as legislators to make certain that the interests of all parties are represented impartially and without influence. Please join me in sponsoring this important legislation.
