MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 30, 2014 08:27 AM
From: Representative Tina M. Davis
To: All House members
Subject: Background Check Fee Waiver for Volunteer Firefighters and EMS Providers

In the near future, I will re-introduce legislation – House Bill 1745 – to amend Title 18 (Crimes and Offenses) of the Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes by exempting current and prospective volunteer firefighters and members of emergency medical services (EMS) agencies from the $10 criminal background check fee.

As a condition of employment, most prospective volunteer firefighters and EMS providers are required to remit $10 for the purpose of a criminal background check conducted by the Pennsylvania State Police. Some volunteer firefighter and EMS organizations across the Commonwealth are now exploring the idea of requiring a criminal background check periodically throughout the course of an individual’s career. The purpose of my legislation is to reduce the financial burden caused by this fee for prospective and current volunteer firefighters and EMS providers. These individuals save lives throughout the Commonwealth every day and are well deserving of having this required fee waived.

I invite you to co-sponsor this important legislation.
