MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 11, 2014 11:45 AM
From: Representative Angel Cruz
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution Declaring 2015 as the “Year of the Borinqueneers” in Pennsylvania

In the near future I plan to offer a resolution declaring 2015 as the “Year of the Borinqueneers” in Pennsylvania.

"The Borinqueneers" is a nickname for the 65th Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Division in the United States Army, an all-volunteer Puerto Rican unit that participated in World War I, World War II and the Korean War.

Over 61,000 Puerto Ricans served in the United States Army during the Korean War, the bulk of them with the 65th Infantry Regiment. By the time the regiment was inactivated, more than 750 Borinqueneers had died and 2,400 had been wounded in the Korean War alone. During World War II, the Regiment earned 2 Silver Stars, 22 Bronze Stars and 90 Purple Hearts, and during the Korean War, the Borinqueneers earned 1 Medal of Honor, 10 Distinguished Service Crosses, 256 Silver Stars, 606 Bronze Stars and 2,771 Purple Hearts.

Their commitment and courage are indeed deserving of this country's praise and gratitude. I hope you will join me in honoring the 65th Infantry Borinqueneers and the sacrifices they made by co-sponsoring this resolution. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
