Subject: | Married Name Change Resolution (Former HR 1097) |
In the near future, I plan to re-introduce a resolution, former HR 1097, urging the Department of Transportation to change their unfair and unreasonable policy of requiring difficult-to-obtain documentation to effect a change of name of a woman or man who adopts the surname of her/his spouse and retains the former surname as a middle name. If you are like me, you have undoubtedly had frustrated constituents contact you because of what I would call a loophole that exists in PennDOT rules for license/ID card name changes. In these circumstances, the marriage certificate along with a Social Security card should be considered sufficient documentation. Most of these cases involve women who made a decision to keep their maiden name as their middle name, then after they initiate the name change with the Social Security Administration find out that changing their PA License is very difficult. I think that it is time we stop punishing women in our state for wanting to keep their former last name as part of their identity. Please join me in simplifying this process. |
