House of Representatives
Session of 2015 - 2016 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 3, 2014 01:01 PM
From: Representative Ed Gainey
To: All House members
Subject: RE-INTRODUCTION: Patient Comfot & Palliative Care (former HB 2360 of 2013-14 session)

For the upcoming session of 2015-16, I intend to re-introduce companion legislation in the House that is identical to Senator Costa’s SB 453, PN 1555 from last session. This was former HB 2360, which creates the Patient Comfort Act, which establishes a Patient's Bill of Rights for Palliative Care and Pain Management, including the right for terminally ill patients to be informed by a physician of all available options related to terminal care. The bill would also require the Department of Health to establish a Palliative Care and Pain Management Task Force -- whose purpose would be to help patients gain access for services and propose solutions for addressing gaps in services.

A draft copy of the legislation is attached for your review and consideration.
