MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 27, 2016 04:10 PM
From: Representative Kevin J. Schreiber
To: All House members
Subject: School Bus Driver Appreciation Day

In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution to designate May 2, 2016, as “School Bus Driver Appreciation Day” in Pennsylvania.

According to the American School Bus Council, an estimated 480,000 school buses carry 25 million schoolchildren each day, making the school bus industry the largest form of mass transit in the United States. In Pennsylvania, the Department of Transportation estimates there are more than 45,000 licensed school bus drivers and 31,000 registered school buses in the Commonwealth.

School bus drivers and school transportation staff play an integral role in ensuring that our children get to and from school, sporting events, field trips and other school-related extracurricular activities safely. In addition to ensuring the safe transport of students, school bus drivers assume the responsibility of supervising students riding the bus and help to provide a safe atmosphere that is free from bullying. During an average year, school bus drivers log more than 300 million miles transporting students to and from school and school-sponsored activities often working evenings and weekends and during inclement weather.

School bus drivers have a profound impact on our communities by ensuring improved access to learning through the safe transportation of schoolchildren, and by promoting a cleaner environment by reducing the number of vehicles on our roads and highways.

Please join me in commending these dedicated men and women by co-sponsoring my resolution to designate May 2, 2016, as “School Bus Driver Appreciation Day” in Pennsylvania by contacting Maria Halkias by telephone at (717) 772-9902 or e-mail mhalkias@pahouse.net.
