MEMORANDUM

Posted: September 22, 2014 01:12 PM
From: Representative Pam Snyder and Rep. Ron Miller
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution Urging the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to Schedule Public Hearings in Pennsylvania’s Coal Communities Regarding the EPA’s Clean Power Plan

In the near future, we will be introducing a resolution urging the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to schedule public hearings in Pennsylvania’s coal communities on the EPA’s proposed Clean Power Plan.

The goal of the Clean Power Plan is to reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change. While this is a worthy goal, we are concerned that the Plan would discriminately target the American coal industry. Experts predict a loss of approximately 65,000 coal, utility, and railroad jobs nationwide by 2030. Even if the Clean Power Plan is fully implemented, it would only reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by one percent. This small reduction is not worth the extreme financial burden shouldered on the coal-producing states like Pennsylvania.

At this time, the EPA does not plan on holding public meetings near coal communities. It is our hope that this resolution, which would be presented to all members of the Pennsylvania Congressional Delegation, would help to facilitate the scheduling of public hearings within Pennsylvania’s coal communities. The people of Pennsylvania deserve a voice during this process.
