Subject: | Public Assistance Recipients Receiving Gift Cards |
In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation that, if enacted, will amend the Public Welfare Code of 1967 to prohibit the use of taxpayer dollars to incentivize individuals to use public assistance benefits. This legislation is a result of Gateway Health, one of the Commonwealth’s Managed Care Organizations, developing a program to distribute $25 Walmart gift cards to Medical Assistance recipients who go to the dentist for an annual checkup. This program was developed after Gateway identified individuals who were not utilizing preventative dental care. While I understand the intent is to incentivize the preventive aspect of healthcare, it is objectionable to taxpayers to provide additional cash incentives to those who already receive free or reduced cost benefits. If you believe this is an inappropriate use of public funds, please join me in cosponsoring this legislation. |
