House of Representatives
Session of 2013 - 2014 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: September 18, 2014 11:56 AM
From: Representative Marty Flynn
To: All House members
Subject: School Attendance Awareness Month

I will soon introduce a resolution to have the House of Representatives designate September 2014 as School Attendance Awareness Month in Pennsylvania. The resolution also will generally recognize all students who maintain good attendance, which would be defined as missing no more than two days a year for any reason, up to perfect attendance in a school year.

Further, the resolution will ask all school districts to more specifically recognize such students in some way. Additionally, the resolution will urge districts to do more to track, calculate, share and use data on how many students are chronically absent to assist such students and their families so that their education achievement increases and they remain in school through graduation.

Attendance Works is a national and state initiative established in 2010 to promote awareness of the important role school attendance plays in achieving academic success starting with school entry. It has deemed September as National Attendance Awareness Month as part of its goal to ensure every district in the country tracks chronic absence data beginning in kindergarten and to also partner with families and community agencies to intervene when attendance becomes a problem for children or particular schools. It has asked others to also promote the effort and goal.

By passing this resolution, the House will join in with that national effort to promote good to perfect attendance in schools. The House also will show its support of schools that recognize students who attain good or perfect attendance records. Lastly, passage of the resolution will support efforts by school districts to use attendance data to tackle the problem of chronic absenteeism and keep students in school until they graduate.

I ask each of you to join with me in cosponsoring and supporting this resolution. Thank you.
