Subject: | Co-sponsorship Request - Condolence Resolution Honoring the Life of Former Pennsylvania Governor George M. Leader |
In the near future, I will be introducing a condolence resolution honoring the life of former Pennsylvania Governor George M. Leader. George M. Leader was born on January 17, 1918, into a family with strong ties to York County and today the community of Leader Heights bears the family name. Leader’s distinguished record of public service includes four years in the State Senate where he served from 1951-1954 until he took office as governor in 1955. Of particular note, Leader was only 37 when he became governor earning him the distinction of being the second-youngest person to serve as governor in the Commonwealth. During his administration, Leader is credited with overhauling the state’s mental health system and making special education a requirement in Pennsylvania schools. Following his tenure as a public servant, Leader spent a number of years working on prison reform. Sadly, George M. Leader passed away at age 95 on Thursday, May 9, 2013, while surrounded by family. Please join me in honoring his life and legacy and in expressing condolences to his family and friends by co-sponsoring this condolence resolution. |
