A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the week of May 7 through 13, 2023, as "National
Hospital Week" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, The hardworking professionals of Pennsylvania's
hospitals and health systems ensure that every Commonwealth
resident can receive high-quality health care 24 hours a day, 7
days a week, 365 days a year; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the many waves and ever-changing
circumstances of the pandemic, opioid emergency and behavioral
health crisis, and despite the physical and emotional toll on
themselves and their families, Pennsylvania's hospital and
health system professionals never waiver in caring for our
communities; and
WHEREAS, Despite enduring the most challenging shared health
crises of our lifetimes, Pennsylvania's hospitals still provided
$884 million in uncompensated care to members of our communities
in 2021; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's hospitals work to keep our families

whole and strong via, among other services, 50 trauma centers
that save more than 46,000 lives on average each year since 2016
and obstetric units that delivered nearly 125,000 babies in
2021; and
WHEREAS, The Commonwealth's hospitals provided 1.5 million
instances of in-patient treatment as well as emergency
department care more than 5.4 million times in 2021; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania takes pride in its 118 teaching
hospitals that are investing in the next generation of
lifesaving health practitioners and 40 hospitals that are
recognized with the prestigious "Magnet" designation by the
American Nurses Credentialing Center; and
WHEREAS, Hospitals are the largest employer in 18
Pennsylvania counties and among the top 10 employers in 41
additional counties; and
WHEREAS, Hospitals and health systems are responsible for 1
in 10 jobs across the Commonwealth, including more than 267,000
of our families, friends and neighbors directly employed and
more than 323,000 more supported by hospital-generated industry;
and
WHEREAS, Hospitals and their affiliated medical schools bring
close to $2 billion in Federal health care research grants into
the Commonwealth and generate approximately $168 billion in
other economic activity in State and local economies, accounting
for approximately 20% of Pennsylvania's gross domestic product;
and
WHEREAS, "National Hospital Week" celebrates hospitals and
the people who support the health of their communities with
dedication and compassion; and
WHEREAS, This observance is a reminder that hospitals are

foundations of the communities that built them, serving people
from all walks of life; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
week of May 7 through 13, 2023, as "National Hospital Week" in
Pennsylvania; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives thank front-line
health care workers and hospital employees for their dedicated
service to the residents of Pennsylvania; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge residents to
show appreciation to hospital workers for their devotion and
compassion even in the most difficult of circumstances; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge its members
to visit the hospitals in their communities to learn about the
innovative, quality care and services that are improving the
health and well-being of residents of this Commonwealth.
