A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
Designating the week of March 12 through 18, 2023, as
"AmeriCorps Week" in Pennsylvania and expressing appreciation
for AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers
across this Commonwealth.
WHEREAS, Since the creation of AmeriCorps in 1993, the
AmeriCorps national service program has proven to be highly
effective in engaging Americans of all ages and backgrounds in
meeting a wide range of community needs and promoting the ethics
of service and volunteerism; and
WHEREAS, Each year, AmeriCorps, including AmeriCorps State
and National, AmeriCorps NCCC, AmeriCorps VISTA and AmeriCorps
Seniors, provides opportunities for 250,000 individuals across
the nation, including 11,300 in this Commonwealth, to give back
in an intensive way to communities, helping to improve the lives
of this Commonwealth's most vulnerable residents, strengthening
the educational system, protecting the environment and
contributing to public safety; and
WHEREAS, PennSERVE and the AmeriCorps agency have
strengthened this Commonwealth's private sector by investing

more than $35 million this past year to support the efforts of
more than 1,400 nonprofit organizations, schools and community
groups, providing grants which leveraged more than $14 million
in outside resources from businesses, foundations, public
agencies and other sources, strengthening community impact and
increasing the return on taxpayer dollars; and
WHEREAS, AmeriCorps members nationwide, in return for their
service, have earned more than $4 billion in Segal AmeriCorps
Education Awards to use to further their own educational
advancement at colleges and universities, including $189 million
that have been awarded to residents of this Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, After their terms of service end, AmeriCorps members
remain engaged in our communities as volunteers, teachers,
public servants and nonprofit leaders at disproportionately high
levels; and
WHEREAS, "AmeriCorps Week" is an opportune time for the
residents of this Commonwealth to salute AmeriCorps members and
AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers of the past and present for their
powerful impact and to thank all AmeriCorps community partners
in this Commonwealth who make the program possible and bring
more Americans into service; therefore be it
RESOLVED (the Senate concurring), That the General Assembly
designate the week of March 12 through 18, 2023, as "AmeriCorps
Week" in Pennsylvania and express appreciation for AmeriCorps
members and AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers across this
Commonwealth; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the General Assembly urge all residents of
this Commonwealth to thank AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps
Seniors volunteers of the past and present for their service to
our communities.
