A RESOLUTION
Designating the month of September 2021 as "Suicide Prevention
Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania to promote suicide
prevention and to raise greater awareness of the problem of
suicide.
WHEREAS, Approximately 1,887 Commonwealth residents lost
their lives to suicide in 2019; and
WHEREAS, According to the National Center for Injury
Prevention and Control, suicide is the second leading cause of
death for young people 15 to 24 years of age; and
WHEREAS, Suicide affects all races, genders and age groups
with an estimated quarter million suicide survivors each year;
and
WHEREAS, Suicidal behavior is a serious and persistent public
health concern with devastating effects on families and
communities; and
WHEREAS, Education and awareness are crucial tools that may
assist in combating suicide rates in this Commonwealth and

nationwide; and
WHEREAS, Research demonstrates that increased public
awareness of the warning signs of suicide and awareness of
appropriate and effective intervention strategies reduce
suicidal deaths; and
WHEREAS, The annual "World Suicide Prevention Day" is
September 10, 2021; and
WHEREAS, September is "National Suicide Prevention and
Awareness Month," which promotes resources and awareness around
the issues of suicide prevention; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of September
2021, as "Suicide Prevention Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania to
promote suicide prevention and to raise greater awareness of the
problem of suicide; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the seriousness of the
issue of suicide in this Commonwealth and encourages the
residents of this Commonwealth to learn more about the warning
signs of suicide and how each individual can help prevent
suicide and promote mental health.
