AN ACT
Amending Title 75 (Vehicles) of the Pennsylvania Consolidated
Statutes, in registration of vehicles, further providing for
lost, stolen, damaged or illegible registration plate.
The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
hereby enacts as follows:
Section 1. Section 1333(b.1) of Title 75 of the Pennsylvania
Consolidated Statutes is amended to read:
ยง 1333. Lost, stolen, damaged or illegible registration plate.

(b.1) Illegible registration plate.--[The department may
reissue a registration plate upon request by a registrant when
it is determined by an authorized representative of the
department or law enforcement that the registration plate is
illegible from a reasonable distance. The department may select
the style of the reissued registration plate and, except in the
case of personal registration plates issued under section 1341
(relating to special registration plates), the registration
plate number.]

(1) The department shall reissue a registration plate at
no cost if the registration plate has become illegible from a
reasonable distance, subject to the following:
(i) The illegible registration plate was issued
within the last 10 years by the department.
(ii) An authorized representative of the department
or law enforcement has certified that the registration
plate has become illegible from a reasonable distance.
(2) A registration plate reissued under paragraph (1)
shall be the same type of registration plate as the illegible
registration plate, including personal registration plates
issued under section 1341 (relating to special registration
plates) or any other registration plate authorized by this
subchapter.
(3) The department shall not be required to reissue the
same type of registration plate under paragraph (2) if the
type of registration plate has been discontinued. If a type
of registration plate has been discontinued, the department
shall reissue a standard registration plate.
(4) If the department reissues a registration plate
under this subsection for an illegible plate that has been
personalized under section 1341, the reissued registration
plate shall consist of the same alphanumeric pattern as the
illegible registration plate.

Section 2. This act shall take effect in 60 days.
