A RESOLUTION
Designating the week of October 22 through 26, 2018, as "School
Bus Safety Week" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, "School Bus Safety Week" is recognized across the
United States to raise awareness and address the importance of
school bus safety; and
WHEREAS, Nationally, school bus ridership has grown to more
than 26 million and continues to provide a safe, critical
transportation service for children and teenagers in school; and
WHEREAS, The school bus remains the safest way to travel to
and from school; and
WHEREAS, Students are approximately 70 times more likely to
get to school safely if they take the school bus instead of
traveling by car; and
WHEREAS, In this Commonwealth, school bus safety is a top
priority for the 1.5 million children who are transported on our
roads each day; and

WHEREAS, Students, parents, school officials, school bus
drivers and the motoring public all play an integral role in
keeping our children safe while on or around the school bus; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's School Bus Stopping Law requires
motorists to obey the following:
(1) Stop when meeting or overtaking a stopped school bus
with red signal lights flashing and stop arm extended.
(2) Stop when approaching an intersection where a school
bus is stopped with red signal lights flashing and stop arm
extended.
(3) Stop at least 10 feet away from a school bus.
(4) Wait until the red lights have stopped flashing and
the stop arm has been withdrawn before moving.
(5) Wait until all children have reached a place of
safety;
and
WHEREAS, Failure to obey the School Bus Stopping Law subjects
offenders to a 60-day license suspension, 5 points on the
offender's driving record and a $250 fine; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the week of October 22
through 26, 2018, as "School Bus Safety Week" in Pennsylvania;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Senate address the importance of school
bus safety to ensure our children return home safely each day.
