A RESOLUTION
Designating the month of May 2018 as "Motorcycle Safety
Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, In 2016, there were 5,286 motorcyclists killed in
traffic crashes across the United States, a 5% increase from
2015, which accounted for 14% of the total highway fatalities
from 2016; and
WHEREAS, In 2016, there were 192 motorcycle fatalities in
this Commonwealth, a 7% increase from 2015; and
WHEREAS, The total number of motorcycle crashes increased
from 3,413 in 2015 to 3,454 in 2016 in this Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, This Commonwealth has witnessed too many lives lost
and people severely injured in motorcycle crashes, placing a
significant burden on our families and communities; and
WHEREAS, Motorcyclists should consider better ways to enhance
motorcycle safety, such as attending free training provided by
the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation's Motorcycle
Safety Program, wearing reflective clothing, always riding sober

and obeying all speed limits; and
WHEREAS, Motorists sharing the road with motorcyclists are
reminded to enhance motorcycle safety by not driving distracted,
checking mirrors and blind spots before changing lanes and at
intersections, allowing more following distance and respecting a
motorcycle as a full-size vehicle; and
WHEREAS, The General Assembly has taken action to reinforce
its commitment to motorcycle safety and continues to focus on
legislative priorities that bring motorcyclists and motorists
home safely every day; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of May 2018 as
"Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That the Senate encourage motorcyclists and
motorists to "share the road" to reduce motorcyclist deaths and
injuries.
