A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the week of May 6 through 12, 2018, as "National
Hospital Week" in Pennsylvania and urging members of the
Senate to visit hospitals in their communities to learn about
the innovative, quality care and services that are improving
the health and quality of life for residents of this
Commonwealth.
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania hospitals and health systems provide
health care services for acute inpatient care as well as
outpatient, emergency, behavioral health, rehabilitation, long-
term care services and home care services 24 hours a day, 7 days
a week; and
WHEREAS, Specialized hospital care is provided by
Pennsylvania's nearly 40 trauma centers, 6 burn centers and 15
critical access hospitals affording care for the most rural
populations in this Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania is home to seven academic medical
centers and numerous teaching hospitals and medical schools that
train future health care providers and invest in critical health

research; and
WHEREAS, In 1921, "National Hospital Week" was first observed
in Chicago to build trust during the Spanish influenza outbreak;
and
WHEREAS, The celebration serves as a reminder that hospitals
are foundations of the communities and serve people from all
walks of life in every community; and
WHEREAS, "National Hospital Week" celebrates hospitals and
those who support the health of their communities through
dedication and compassionate care; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania hospitals today are multidimensional
organizations partnering with many other organizations in their
communities to offer care with a focus on population health,
prevention and wellness; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania hospitals provide free care to those
who have no health care insurance or inadequate insurance
coverage, providing nearly $900 million in uncompensated care
annually; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania hospitals contributed more than $121
billion to this Commonwealth's economy during 2016; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania hospitals are among the leading
employers in their communities, providing approximately 590,000
total jobs, directly and indirectly; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize May 6 through 12, 2018,
as "National Hospital Week" in Pennsylvania; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Senate urge its members to visit the
hospitals in their communities to learn about the innovative,
quality care and services that are improving the health and
quality of life for residents of this Commonwealth.
