A RESOLUTION
Congratulating the Pittsburgh Penguins hockey team as the 2016-
2017 National Hockey League Stanley Cup Champions.
WHEREAS, The Pittsburgh Penguins, known as the "Pens," have
qualified for the Stanley Cup playoffs for 11 straight seasons,
now resulting in the organization holding the longest active
playoff streaks in both the National Hockey League (NHL) and the
American Hockey League (AHL); and
WHEREAS, Coached by Mike Sullivan, the Pittsburgh Penguins
became the first hockey team in nearly two decades to win a
second consecutive Stanley Cup championship when they defeated
the Nashville Predators in Game 6; and
WHEREAS, The Pittsburgh Penguins have won five championships
since 1991; and
WHEREAS, A celebratory parade was held in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania, which also marked the 50th anniversary of the
first NHL season for the Pittsburgh Penguins; and
WHEREAS, A record 650,000 fans attended the parade to cheer

on the black and gold champions; and
WHEREAS, This Stanley Cup is the third win for Sidney Crosby,
the Penguins' captain, who also won his second consecutive Conn
Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the postseason; and
WHEREAS, Sidney Crosby became the first player to receive the
Conn Smythe trophy in consecutive years since the Pittsburgh
Penguins' Mario Lemieux won it in 1991 and 1992; and
WHEREAS, The Pittsburgh Penguins repeat Stanley Cup
championships reiterates why Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is known
as the "City of Champions"; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate congratulate the Pittsburgh
Penguins hockey team as the 2016-2017 National Hockey League
Stanley Cup Champions.
