A RESOLUTION
Designating June 3, 2017, as "Alex's Lemonade Stand Day" in
Pennsylvania and encouraging all residents to contribute to
the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation and other pediatric
cancer research programs.
WHEREAS, Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in
children under 20 years of age; and
WHEREAS, Approximately 15,780 children are diagnosed with
cancer in the United States each year; and
WHEREAS, Due to advances in research, 80% of children with
cancer now survive five years or more; and
WHEREAS, Alexandra Scott was an extraordinary person who was
diagnosed with neuroblastoma, an aggressive childhood cancer,
two days before her first birthday; and
WHEREAS, In July 2000, at four years of age, Alex opened her
first lemonade stand to raise money for pediatric cancer
research; and
WHEREAS, On August 1, 2004, Alex passed away at eight years
of age; and

WHEREAS, Since Alex's first lemonade stand in 2000, there
have been more than 4,000 Alex's Lemonade Stands and events held
in all 50 states; and
WHEREAS, The Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation was created to
accept and manage donations from all over the world; and
WHEREAS, The Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation has raised
nearly $127 million for pediatric cancer research, far
surpassing the $1 million monetary goal established by Alex
before she passed away; and
WHEREAS, Alex's efforts have garnered national and
international attention and have inspired hundreds of
individuals to donate to pediatric cancer research; and
WHEREAS, The Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation continues to
raise awareness and financial support for research in childhood
cancers; and
WHEREAS, During the week of June 3 through 11, 2017,
volunteers across the country are hosting an Alex's Lemonade
Stand to support Alex's cause in the fight to find a cure for
childhood cancers; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate designate June 3, 2017, as "Alex's
Lemonade Stand Day" in Pennsylvania and encourage all residents
to contribute to the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation and other
pediatric cancer research programs.
