A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the week of May 14 through 20, 2017, as "National
Police Week" and designating May 8, 2017, as "Police
Officers' Memorial Day" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Since the beginning of law enforcement within this
Commonwealth, hundreds of police officers have made the ultimate
sacrifice while in the line of duty, including Police Officer
Scott Leslie Bashioum, Canonsburg Borough Police Department and
Trooper Landon E. Weaver, Pennsylvania State Police, who died in
2016; and
WHEREAS, Patrolman Edward A. Wehe, III, Delaware County
Courthouse and Park Police Department, died on November 5, 2013
of a heart attack shortly after removing protestors from
Delaware County Prison who did not have the proper permits; and
WHEREAS, Police Officer Walter J. DeWitt, III, Philadelphia
Police Department, died on June 5, 2015, during surgery from on-
the-job health complications; and

WHEREAS, Across the United States, the week of May 14 through
20, 2017, is being recognized as "National Police Week"; and
WHEREAS, The first "National Police Officers' Memorial Day"
was held on May 15, 1982, following a proclamation signed by
President John F. Kennedy on October 1, 1962; and
WHEREAS, The observance continues to be held annually in
memory of those police officers who have made the ultimate
sacrifice in the line of duty; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate honor the memory of the hundreds of
police officers who have given their lives in the line of duty
in this Commonwealth; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the week of May 14
through 20, 2017, as "National Police Week" and designating May
8, 2017, as "Police Officers' Memorial Day" in Pennsylvania.
