A RESOLUTION
Commemorating the 100th anniversary of the cessation of
hostilities of World War I, remembering the valor and
sacrifice of United States troops and noting their lasting
impact on military history and American culture.
WHEREAS, The United States entered World War I with a
declaration of war against Germany on April 6, 1917; and
WHEREAS, German naval attacks on merchant and supply ships in
a German-declared war zone around the British Isles had caused
American civilian and military casualties, violating American
neutrality; and
WHEREAS, Individuals of all races, ethnicities and creeds
came together to quickly mobilize and build the strength of the
military and forge a new American identity; and
WHEREAS, At the time of the declaration of war, 26 million
men of the 54 million men in the United States were either

registered for the draft or already serving in the military; and
WHEREAS, When the ceasefire and armistice took effect in
November 1918, approximately 24 million men had registered under
the Selective Service Act; and
WHEREAS, Of the nearly 4.8 million Americans who would serve
in the war, 2.8 million had been drafted; and
WHEREAS, The use of new weapons and technologies such as
aircraft and anti-aircraft artillery, tanks, motor transport,
aircraft carriers, chemical weapons, submarines and anti-
submarine weapons, underwater mines and sonar; and
WHEREAS, The American Expeditionary Forces fought in 13
distinct campaigns; and
WHEREAS, The war claimed the lives of more than 5 million
Allied troops; and
WHEREAS, Nearly 13 million Allied troops were wounded; and
WHEREAS, More the 36,000 casualties were Pennsylvanians; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvanians produced more than half of the steel
used by the Allies and contributed more than $3 billion to the
war effort through the sale of Liberty bonds and Victory bonds;
and
WHEREAS, On November 11, 1918, 19 months and five days after
the United States entered the war, Germany signed the armistice
agreement; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the
100th anniversary of the cessation of hostilities of World War
I, remember the valor and sacrifice of United States troops and
note their lasting impact on military history and American
culture; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commend the
wartime acts of soldiers and civilians who preserved and

protected United States interests and call on all Pennsylvanians
at home and overseas to join in commemorating this centennial.
