A RESOLUTION
Designating 2018 as "Year of the Woman" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, 2018 is a year to celebrate acts of courage and
determination by women who are playing an extraordinary role in
the history of our Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Many Pennsylvania women have achieved above and
beyond in their respective fields; and
WHEREAS, Their acts of courage, tenacity and accomplishment
show their strength and success in all walks of life and the
pursuit of their dreams; and
WHEREAS, Several Pennsylvania women have risen in their
talents in the arts, inspiring others to dare to dream and
pursue their passions, including Christina Aguilera, a five-time
Grammy Award winner, and Taylor Swift, a ten-time Grammy Award
winner who holds six Guinness World Records; and

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania has notable women in the medical field
who have reached new heights in their careers and in the search
to assist others in achieving their best lives; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Lucy B. Rorke-Adams, with 60 years of experience
in her field, became a leading voice in neuropathology as a
doctor at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and clinical
professor at the University of Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, Susan P. Byrnes, R.N., dedicated her life as a nurse
to preventing premature death caused by unhealthy choices and
opened the Byrnes Health Education Center in 1995 to continue to
educate others about making healthy choices; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania is home to the country's first female
brewmaster since Prohibition, Carol Stoudt, a pioneer in the
brewing industry who started Stoudt Brewing Co. more than 30
years ago; and
WHEREAS, Hagir Elsheikh is a Pennsylvania professor and
activist who in 2013 started HSE Staffing Agency, LLC, which
pairs health care providers with skilled employees and is
considered one of the leading agencies in central Pennsylvania;
and
WHEREAS, Ms. Elsheikh is an advocate for victims of violence
through Tomorrow's Smiles, Inc., her nonprofit organization, and
shares podcasts on important topics, including human
trafficking; and
WHEREAS, Loretta Claiborne, an athlete originally from York
County who was born partially blind and unable to talk until age
four, has competed in six Special Olympics as a runner and has
earned a gold medal; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate 2018 as
the "Year of the Woman" in Pennsylvania; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives celebrate these
women and the countless others who have shown extraordinary
courage, success and tenacity in all they pursue and recognize
their role in the history of this Commonwealth.
