A RESOLUTION
Honoring the life and achievements of United States Senator John
McCain and expressing condolences on his passing.
WHEREAS, On August 25, 2018, United States Senator John
McCain succumbed to brain cancer just days before his 82nd
birthday; and
WHEREAS, John Sidney McCain III was born on August 29, 1936,
at Coco Solo Naval Air Station in the Panama Canal Zone, to
naval officer John S. McCain Jr. and Roberta McCain; and
WHEREAS, Senator McCain's father and grandfather both
achieved the rank of four-star admirals in the United States
Navy and, in 1958, Senator McCain graduated from the United
States Naval Academy at Annapolis; and
WHEREAS, After completing his pilot training at Pensacola,
Florida, Senator McCain deployed to the Gulf of Tonkin; and
WHEREAS, During his time serving in the Vietnam War, Senator

McCain went above and beyond in service to his country and his
fellow soldiers; and
WHEREAS, In 1967, Senator McCain was captured in Hanoi and
offered early release which he turned down, refusing to leave
behind his fellow prisoners of war; and
WHEREAS, After more than five years of being tortured,
spending two years in solitary confinement and almost dying,
Senator McCain was finally freed and returned to the United
States as a hero in 1973; and
WHEREAS, After his return to the United States and his
recovery, Senator McCain continued his military career rising to
the rank of Captain; and
WHEREAS, In 1981, Senator McCain left the service having
earned numerous military decorations and awards, including the
Silver Star Medal, two Legions of Merit, Distinguished Flying
Cross, three Bronze Star Medals, two Purple Hearts, two Navy and
Marine Corps Commendation Medals and the Prisoner of War Medal;
and
WHEREAS, After his military service to the country, Senator
McCain decided to run for office and was elected to the United
States House of Representatives in 1982 to represent his beloved
Arizona; and
WHEREAS, Following his reelection to a second term, Senator
McCain set his sights on a seat in the United States Senate and
won his first term in 1987; and
WHEREAS, Senator McCain dedicated his life to public service
and was known as the "Maverick" for his strength in doing what
he thought was best for his constituents and his country; and
WHEREAS, On July 19, 2017, Senator McCain's office revealed
that the senator had surgery for a brain tumor associated with

glioblastoma; and
WHEREAS, Senator McCain died on August 25, 2018, and became
the 31st individual to lie in state in the United States Capitol
Rotunda; and
WHEREAS, Senator McCain was laid to rest in the United States
Naval Academy Cemetery on September 2, 2018, next to his
classmate and lifelong friend Admiral Charles R. Larson; and
WHEREAS, Senator McCain will always be remembered as a war
hero and dedicated public servant; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the life
and achievements of United States Senator John McCain and
express condolences on his passing.
