INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
SEPTEMBER 14, 2018
A RESOLUTION
Designating the month of October 2018 as "Fire Prevention Month"
and recognizing the week of October 7 through 13, 2018, as
"National Fire Prevention Week" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Fires are a serious safety concern both nationally
and locally; and
WHEREAS, People face the greatest risk of fire in their
homes; and
WHEREAS, According to the National Fire Protection
Association (NFPA), more than 1.3 million fires were reported by
fire departments in 2016, resulting in approximately 3,390
civilian deaths, the highest number of fatalities since 2008;
and
WHEREAS, In a fire, seconds can mean the difference between
escaping safely or having lives end in tragedy; and

WHEREAS, It is critical for everyone to have an escape plan
that includes two exits from each room and a path outside from
each exit; and
WHEREAS, The NFPA picked the theme "Look. Listen. Learn. Be
aware. Fire can happen anywhere," for the 2018 "National Fire
Prevention Week" to educate people about basic but essential
ways to quickly and safely escape a home fire; and
WHEREAS, Promotion of the theme provides an ideal opportunity
to educate the public of the danger fires pose in homes
throughout our communities; and
WHEREAS, This Commonwealth's first responders exhibit great
dedication to reducing the occurrence of home fires and home
fire injuries through prevention and protection education and
through their quick response to emergencies; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
month of October 2018 as "Fire Prevention Month" and recognize
the week of October 7 through 13, 2018, as "National Fire
Prevention Week" in Pennsylvania; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge all
residents, landlords, businesses and other property owners to
protect their homes, businesses and property by heeding the
important safety messages of "National Fire Prevention Week"
which can be found on the NPFA publicly accessible Internet
website; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commend all
firefighters, other first responders and those who provide
support for their efforts to prevent, fight and stop fires.
