A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the month of May 2018 as "Blue Star Mothers of
America Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, The Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc., was founded
as a patriotic service organization on February 1, 1942, to
unite mothers who had sons or daughters in the United States
Armed Forces; and
WHEREAS, The nonpartisan, nonsectarian, nondiscriminatory and
nonprofit organization was chartered by the Congress of the
United States in 1960; and
WHEREAS, Mothers, stepmothers, grandmothers, foster mothers
and female legal guardians who have sons or daughters who are
currently serving in the United States military or who are
honorably discharged veterans are eligible for membership in the
organization; and

WHEREAS, Family members and friends may become associate
members, and fathers of military personnel or veterans may join
the Blue Star Dads' Association; and
WHEREAS, The work of Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc.,
includes providing support for active duty service personnel and
families, promoting patriotism and assisting various veterans
organizations, including the American Gold Star Mothers, Inc.;
and
WHEREAS, The work of the Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc.,
is increasingly important because of:
(1) the hundreds of thousands of United States Armed
Forces men and women who have served or are serving in
Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom and the
Global War on Terrorism; and
(2) the ongoing deployments of the Pennsylvania National
Guard and our active duty military and its reserve
components;
and
WHEREAS, The dedication, sacrifice and hard work of the
devoted members of the Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc., merit
recognition; and
WHEREAS, The Blue Star Service Flag is an official banner
authorized by the Department of Defense to be displayed by
families who have members serving in the United States Armed
Forces during a period of war or hostility in the nation; and
WHEREAS, In 1917, the Blue Star Service Flag was designed and
patented by World War I Army Captain Robert L. Queisser of the
5th Ohio Infantry who had two sons serving on the front lines;
and
WHEREAS, The Blue Star Service Flag quickly became an

unofficial symbol used to represent a child in service;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
month of May 2018 as "Blue Star Mothers of America Month" in
Pennsylvania; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives encourage all
residents of this Commonwealth to take some time during the
month of May 2018 to honor and recognize the dedication and
sacrifice of the Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc.; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize and
celebrate the history and contributions of Blue Star Mothers of
America, Inc.; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc.
