A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the week of March 5 through 9, 2018, as "National
School Breakfast Week" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, "National School Breakfast Week" is observed
annually to increase student participation in the child
nutrition initiative known as the School Breakfast Program; and
WHEREAS, Administered federally by the Food and Nutrition
Service of the United States Department of Agriculture, the
School Breakfast Program provides healthy breakfast options in
age-appropriate serving sizes to more than 8.5 million
qualifying children each school day; and
WHEREAS, Any public school, intermediate unit, charter
school, area vocational-technical school or career technology
school, public residential child-care institution, tax-exempt
nonpublic school or residential child-care institution may apply
to be a School Breakfast Program sponsor; and
WHEREAS, The Division of Food and Nutrition of the

Pennsylvania Department of Education, recognizing the value of
adequate and proper nutrition for each child, administers the
School Breakfast Program in this Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Local school food authorities operate the School
Breakfast Program in Commonwealth schools for the benefit of
more than 200,000 participating students; and
WHEREAS, The House of Representatives acknowledges the
importance of childhood nutrition and the correlation between
existing school breakfast plans and children's focus on
learning; and
WHEREAS, The House of Representatives notes that schools in
this Commonwealth prepare and serve healthy food options in
keeping with applicable recommendations of the Dietary
Guidelines for Americans; and
WHEREAS, The School Nutrition Association has suggested that
school officials decorate the cafeteria, invite special guests,
offer special menu items and conduct games, activities and
contests in conjunction with "National School Breakfast Week"
observances; and
WHEREAS, Related activity sheets for use in schools are
available at the School Nutrition Association's publicly
accessible Internet website; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
week of March 5 through 9, 2018, as "National School Breakfast
Week" in Pennsylvania.
