Nanticoke, Pennsylvania, bringing with it the lucrative coal
mining industry; and
WHEREAS, The coal mining industry has historically been very
important to Sugar Notch as a major source of employment; and
WHEREAS, In April 1879, seven miners and a boy door tender
were trapped in a mine for five days and were deemed heroes
after being rescued; and
WHEREAS, Sugar Notch has historically had a large Catholic
populace who have worshiped in several of the borough's Roman
Catholic churches; and
WHEREAS, Holy Family Parish, established in 1903 as a Polish
parish serving European immigrants, celebrated its centennial in
September 2003; and
WHEREAS, On August 1, 1948, Eleanor Roosevelt visited Sugar
Notch for the dedication of a war memorial that features a bust
of former President Franklin D. Roosevelt; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Roosevelt lauded the friendly people of Sugar
Notch and thanked them for honoring President Roosevelt; and
WHEREAS, In October 1960, John F. Kennedy stopped at the war
memorial in Sugar Notch to give a short speech just prior to
being elected President of the United States; and
WHEREAS, Sugar Notch observes its 150th anniversary in 2017;
and
WHEREAS, The Sesquicentennial Committee commemorating the
150th anniversary of Sugar Notch consists of Mayor William
Davis, honorary chairman; Kendal Hancock, chairman; Mary Kay
Pettinger, secretary; Marsha Panetta, treasurer; and members
Regina Fillman, Diane Yatko Evans, Linda Helfrich and Jason
Garcia; and
WHEREAS, The commemoration includes a Memorial Day tribute to
