A RESOLUTION
Recognizing April 2017 as "Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia
Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is
characterized by the abnormal development of the diaphragm
before birth, resulting in defects ranging from a thinned area
in the diaphragm to its complete absence; and
WHEREAS, At approximately eight weeks' gestation, the
diaphragm fails to fully form, allowing abdominal organs to
shift into the chest cavity and preventing lung growth; and
WHEREAS, CDH affects approximately 1 in 2,500 newborns; and
WHEREAS, There is no known cause of or cure for CDH; and
WHEREAS, CDH is fatal for approximately 50% of newborns with
the condition; and
WHEREAS, Newborns with CDH often endure multiple surgeries
and possible medical complications beyond the diagnosis,
including asthma, heart defects, pulmonary complications,
