A RESOLUTION
Recognizing April 2017 as "Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia
Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is
characterized by the abnormal development of the diaphragm
before birth, resulting in defects ranging from a thinned area
in the diaphragm to its complete absence; and
WHEREAS, At approximately eight weeks' gestation, the
diaphragm fails to fully form, allowing abdominal organs to
shift into the chest cavity and preventing lung growth; and
WHEREAS, CDH affects approximately 1 in 2,500 newborns; and
WHEREAS, There is no known cause of or cure for CDH; and
WHEREAS, CDH is fatal for approximately 50% of newborns with
the condition; and
WHEREAS, Newborns with CDH often endure multiple surgeries
and possible medical complications beyond the diagnosis,
including asthma, heart defects, pulmonary complications,

gastric and intestinal problems and developmental delays; and
WHEREAS, Newborns may require long-term respiratory and
medicinal support; and
WHEREAS, CHERUBS, the world's first and largest CDH charity,
is working with families in the United States and worldwide to
raise awareness in April by hosting events and wearing the CDH
Awareness Ribbon to express the need for research funding; and
WHEREAS, "Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Awareness Month" is
an opportunity to support children with CDH and their families,
honor those who have lost their lives to CDH, recognize those
who have survived CDH and advocate for urgently needed medical
research and advances; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize April
2017 as "Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Awareness Month" in
Pennsylvania.
