INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,

A RESOLUTION
Honoring the medical professionals who served in or assisted the
United States Armed Forces, including doctors, nurses, medics
and first responders.
WHEREAS, During the Revolutionary War, the Army Hospital and
the Medical Corps were formed on July 27, 1775, by the
Continental Congress for the Continental Army and overseen by
the Director General and Chief Physician; and
WHEREAS, The army medical organization was only utilized in
times of war or in the event of an emergency until 1818; and
WHEREAS, In 1818, a permanent Medical Department was formed;
and
WHEREAS, Medical personnel were authorized to wear uniforms
in 1816 and given military rank in 1847; and
WHEREAS, Medical personnel were designated noncombatants
under the Geneva Convention and wore a red cross until World War

II, when enemies no longer recognized the rules of the Geneva
Convention and engaged all personnel; and
WHEREAS, Enlisted medical personnel are known as Combat
Medics in the United States Army and Air Force and Corpsmen in
the United States Navy and Marine Corps; and
WHEREAS, There have been 50 Combat Medic Medal of Honor
recipients; and
WHEREAS, These veterans were completely selfless while saving
lives and simultaneously risking their own; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the medical
professionals who served in or assisted the United States Armed
Forces, including doctors, nurses, medics and first responders;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That we rightly salute the accomplishments of these
medical personnel.
