A RESOLUTION
Recognizing April 7, 2017, as "World Health Day" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, "World Health Day" annually focuses on the global
health priorities of the World Health Organization, the United
Nations' directing and coordinating authority for health; and
WHEREAS, April 7, the date of the World Health Organization's
founding in 1948, is set aside for this global observance; and
WHEREAS, The topic for the 2017 "World Health Day" campaign
is depression; and
WHEREAS, Depression is an illness characterized by persistent
sadness and a loss of interest in activities that were enjoyed,
accompanied by an inability to carry out daily activities, for
at least two weeks; and
WHEREAS, People with depression normally also have several
accompanying symptoms or conditions, including loss of energy, a
change in appetite, a change in sleeping habits, anxiety,

reduced concentration, indecisiveness, restlessness, feelings of
worthlessness, guilt, hopelessness or thoughts of suicide or
self-harm; and
WHEREAS, A better understanding of what depression is and how
it can be prevented and treated will help reduce the stigma
associated with the condition and lead to more people seeking
help; and
WHEREAS, The World Health Organization has chosen to focus on
three groups disproportionately affected by depression,
adolescents and young adults, women of child-bearing age and
older adults; and
WHEREAS, Depression can be effectively prevented and treated
by talk therapy, antidepressant medication or a combination of
these; and
WHEREAS, The House of Representatives joins the World Health
Organization in informing the general public about depression,
the causes and possible consequences, including suicide and what
help is or can be available for prevention and treatment;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize April
7, 2017, as "World Health Day" in Pennsylvania.
