A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the 45th anniversary of the passage of Title IX of
the Education Amendments of 1972 barring discrimination based
on gender in scholastic athletics and education.
WHEREAS, On June 23, 1972, President Richard Nixon signed
into law Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (P.L.92-
318, 86 Stat. 235), which provided that "No person in the United
States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from
participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to
discrimination under any education program or activity receiving
Federal financial assistance"; and
WHEREAS, Title IX grants girls the same access as boys to
federally funded programs and enables millions of girls to take
part in athletic and educational programs; and
WHEREAS, Title IX gives females pursuing not only sports
careers, but also quality educations the right to equal
opportunity; and

WHEREAS, Title IX has addressed inequality in mathematics and
science education and increased diversity in the fields of
science, technology, engineering and mathematics; and
WHEREAS, Since its passage, Title IX has enabled millions of
females to learn important life lessons on teamwork,
independence and leadership; and
WHEREAS, Title IX has not only opened educational doors that
had previously been shut to girls, but it has also expanded
opportunities for females both on the playing field and in the
work force; and
WHEREAS, In 1972, an estimated 294,015 girls participated in
high school sports, but by the 2014-2015 school year, an
estimated 3,287,735 girls were competing in high school sports;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
45th anniversary of the Federal Title IX of the Education
Amendments of 1972, which stands out as a landmark law, breaking
down gender barriers in sports and helping millions of females
reach their potential on and off the field of play, both in this
Commonwealth and across the United States.
