A RESOLUTION
Designating March 29, 2017, as "Pennsylvania Female Veterans
Day."
WHEREAS, Women have a long, courageous and often unrecognized
history in providing military service to our country; and
WHEREAS, Women traditionally served as nurses, typists and
clerks and in other support roles; and
WHEREAS, Prior to the Civil War, women who wanted to serve on
the front lines were forced to disguise themselves as men in
order to serve; and
WHEREAS, It was not until the end of World War I that women
were permitted to join the military, and even then it was only
during wartime; and
WHEREAS, With the passage of the Women's Armed Services
Integration Act of 1948, women were finally allowed to serve as
permanent members of the military and entitled to veterans

benefits; and
WHEREAS, In the last two decades, the value of women in the
military has continued to be recognized with landmark
achievements such as the first women to graduate from the
Virginia Military Institute and the Citadel, the first female
fighter pilots flying combat missions in Iraq and the first
woman to command a United States naval ship; and
WHEREAS, In 2015, we saw yet another extraordinary
achievement for women in the military with the first female
graduates of the Army's elite Ranger School as well as the
Department of Defense announcing that women will be fully
integrated into all positions, including combat positions,
throughout all of the armed forces; and
WHEREAS, There are more than 2 million United States female
veterans, representing 10% of all United States veterans, with
this Commonwealth's female veterans numbered at 71,287; and
WHEREAS, The selflessness and bravery that these women
exhibit in keeping our country safe and protecting our freedoms
shall no longer go unrecognized; and
WHEREAS, Today we rightly salute the accomplishments of the
more than 71,000 female veterans living in this Commonwealth;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate March
29, 2017, as "Pennsylvania Female Veterans Day"; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
the Pennsylvania Commission on Women.
