A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the value of sheltered workshops in the lives of
individuals with disabilities and acknowledging the providers
who enable individuals with disabilities to live full and
productive lives in our communities.
WHEREAS, Based on industrial models of development and
service delivery, vocational facilities known as sheltered
workshops offer specialized employment services and meaningful,
dignified employment for individuals with disabilities; and
WHEREAS, Skill development, productivity and individual work
ethic are the focus of facility-based day programs at sheltered
workshops; and
WHEREAS, Operating in local businesses, small businesses and
large companies, sheltered workshops are involved in the
production of goods and services for both the public and the
private sectors; and
WHEREAS, Individuals with disabilities learn job skills, earn

wages, interact with peers and gain a sense of accomplishment at
sheltered workshops; and
WHEREAS, Individuals with disabilities access a variety of
community-based vocational and personal options at sheltered
workshops; and
WHEREAS, The 511 sheltered workshops throughout this
Commonwealth have advocated for individuals with disabilities
and spurred the development of other needed services and
supports; and
WHEREAS, By providing services unique to the individual and
the local community in which they are located and by working in
partnership with business and industry, sheltered workshops
remain an integral part of local economies; and
WHEREAS, Throughout this Commonwealth, sheltered workshops
feature a wide range of opportunities to advance participants'
feelings of self-worth and inclusion; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
value of sheltered workshops in the lives of individuals with
disabilities and acknowledge the providers who enable
individuals with disabilities to live full and productive lives
in our communities.
