A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the month of November 2016 as "American Diabetes
Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Nearly 30 million Americans, including 1.5 million
persons in this Commonwealth, have diabetes, a serious disease
with potentially life-threatening complications such as heart
disease, stroke, blindness, kidney disease and amputation; and
WHEREAS, It is estimated that every 23 seconds someone in the
United States is diagnosed with diabetes; and
WHEREAS, In addition, 86 million individuals are at risk of
developing type 2 diabetes; and
WHEREAS, Approximately 5% of diabetics are diagnosed with
type 1 diabetes, which is typically diagnosed in children and
young adults; and
WHEREAS, According to a recent study, the incidence rate of
type 1 diabetes among children in Philadelphia has increased 29%
since 1989; and
WHEREAS, The prevalence of diabetes in this Commonwealth has

nearly doubled since 1995; and
WHEREAS, Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death
Statewide; and
WHEREAS, To highlight the daily challenges of millions of
Americans living with this chronic illness, every November the
American Diabetes Association's "American Diabetes Month" is
observed; and
WHEREAS, The 2016 "American Diabetes Month" theme is "This is
Diabetes," with a goal of empowering at-risk individuals and
providing the tools necessary to prevent a diabetes diagnosis;
and
WHEREAS, As part of "American Diabetes Month," the American
Diabetes Association is also celebrating "National Healthy Lunch
Day" on November 15, encouraging everyone to "lunch right with
every bite" and make healthy food choices; and
WHEREAS, Education and community awareness are necessary to
put a stop to the diabetes epidemic; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the month of November
2016 as "American Diabetes Month" in Pennsylvania in keeping
with the American Diabetes Association's movement to confront,
fight and most importantly change the future of this deadly
disease.
