A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the month of November 2016 as "American Diabetes
Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Nearly 30 million Americans, including 1.5 million
persons in this Commonwealth, have diabetes, a serious disease
with potentially life-threatening complications such as heart
disease, stroke, blindness, kidney disease and amputation; and
WHEREAS, It is estimated that every 23 seconds someone in the
United States is diagnosed with diabetes; and
WHEREAS, In addition, 86 million individuals are at risk of
developing type 2 diabetes; and
WHEREAS, Approximately 5% of diabetics are diagnosed with
type 1 diabetes, which is typically diagnosed in children and
young adults; and
WHEREAS, According to a recent study, the incidence rate of
type 1 diabetes among children in Philadelphia has increased 29%
since 1989; and
WHEREAS, The prevalence of diabetes in this Commonwealth has
