A RESOLUTION
Designating the month of September 2016 as "Suicide Prevention
Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Approximately 1,300 Pennsylvanians lose their lives
to suicide every year; and
WHEREAS, According to the Pennsylvania Youth Suicide
Prevention Initiative, suicide is the second leading cause of
death for young people from 15 to 24 years of age; and
WHEREAS, Suicide affects all races, genders and age groups,
with an estimated 250,000 people each year that are suicide
survivors; and
WHEREAS, Suicidal behavior is a serious and persistent public
health concern with devastating effects on families and
communities; and
WHEREAS, Education and awareness are crucial tools that may
assist in combating suicide rates nationwide and in
Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, Research also demonstrates that increased public
awareness of the warning signs of suicide and awareness of

appropriate and effective intervention strategies reduce
suicidal deaths; and
WHEREAS, September 10, 2016, marked the annual "World Suicide
Prevention Day," and the month of September is recognized as
"National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month" which promotes
resources and awareness around the issues of suicide prevention;
and
WHEREAS, The Senate recognizes the seriousness of the issue
of suicide in this Commonwealth and encourages Pennsylvanians to
learn more about the warning signs of suicide and how each
person can help prevent suicide and promote mental health;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of September
2016 as "Suicide Prevention Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
