A RESOLUTION
Designating the month of May 2016 as "Melanoma and Skin Cancer
Detection and Prevention Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Most people do not realize that the skin is the
largest and most visible organ of the body and performs many
essential tasks, such as regulating body temperature, protecting
internal organs, providing sensation and supporting metabolic
functions; and
WHEREAS, Current estimates are that one in five Americans
will develop skin cancer in his or her lifetime; and
WHEREAS, More than 2 million cases of nonmelanoma skin cancer
are diagnosed in the United States each year; and
WHEREAS, Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer
and is the leading cause of death from skin disease; and
WHEREAS, In 2016, the American Cancer Society estimates that
83,510 new cases of melanoma will be diagnosed and that 13,650
deaths will occur from melanoma; and
