A RESOLUTION
Designating the month of May 2016 as "Melanoma and Skin Cancer
Detection and Prevention Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Most people do not realize that the skin is the
largest and most visible organ of the body and performs many
essential tasks, such as regulating body temperature, protecting
internal organs, providing sensation and supporting metabolic
functions; and
WHEREAS, Current estimates are that one in five Americans
will develop skin cancer in his or her lifetime; and
WHEREAS, More than 2 million cases of nonmelanoma skin cancer
are diagnosed in the United States each year; and
WHEREAS, Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer
and is the leading cause of death from skin disease; and
WHEREAS, In 2016, the American Cancer Society estimates that
83,510 new cases of melanoma will be diagnosed and that 13,650
deaths will occur from melanoma; and

WHEREAS, Melanoma is the most common form of cancer for young
adults between 25 and 29 years of age and the second most common
form of cancer for adolescents and young adults between 15 and
29 years of age; and
WHEREAS, Melanoma and other skin cancers are highly treatable
if detected early; and
WHEREAS, Exposure to ultraviolet radiation is the most
preventable risk factor for all skin cancers, including
melanoma; and
WHEREAS, The designation of "Melanoma and Skin Cancer
Detection and Prevention Month" is part of a national public
education campaign that promotes the prevention and early
detection of melanoma and other skin cancers; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of May 2016 as
"Melanoma and Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month" in
Pennsylvania.
