A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the week of May 1 through 7, 2016, as "National
Small Business Week" in Pennsylvania to honor the far-
reaching contributions of small businesses to the economy of
this Commonwealth.
WHEREAS, Small businesses provide crucial contributions to
the nation's economic prosperity and well-being, representing
the ideas of hard work, initiative and the resourcefulness that
make America great; and
WHEREAS, By creating nearly two out of every three new jobs
in the United States and employing half of the nation's private
sector work force, small businesses truly provide the backbone
of our national economy; and
WHEREAS, This Commonwealth is proud to benefit from nearly
one million small businesses that employ 2.4 million
Pennsylvanians, or about half of this Commonwealth's private
work force; and
WHEREAS, Small businesses play a critical role in this

Commonwealth's economy, accounting for 98.2% of businesses in a
wide variety of industries; and
WHEREAS, The top small business industries in this
Commonwealth include professional services, scientific and
technical services, retail trade and construction; and
WHEREAS, In the third quarter of 2015, this Commonwealth's
economy grew at an annual rate of 2.5%, which was faster than
the overall economic growth nationally of 1.9%; and
WHEREAS, This Commonwealth saw an increase of 36.7% in
minority ownership between 2007 and 2012; and
WHEREAS, Small businesses embody what is noteworthy about
America, namely that with determination and responsibility,
citizens can build a better life for themselves, their loved
ones and their communities; and
WHEREAS, For more than two centuries, small businesses in the
United States have been pillars of communities nationwide and
engines of a strong economy, and the innovation of American
entrepreneurs has sparked ideas that have changed the course of
history for the better; and
WHEREAS, The Senate salutes the dedicated entrepreneurs and
employees of small businesses and celebrates the ways in which
small businesses invigorate the economy of this Commonwealth;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the week of May 1 through
7, 2016, as "National Small Business Week" in Pennsylvania to
honor the far-reaching contributions of small businesses to the
economy of this Commonwealth.
