A RESOLUTION
Recognizing May 1, 2016, as "Law Day" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, "Law Day" honors the rule of law as a fundamental
right of citizens, providing the opportunity to live under a
society of equity and justice for all; and
WHEREAS, In 1961, the Congress of the United States encoded
the presidential practice into law and statutorily designated
May 1 as "Law Day"; and
WHEREAS, This year, the nation marks the 50th anniversary of
perhaps the nation's best-known United States Supreme Court
case, Miranda v. Arizona; and
WHEREAS, In honor of this milestone, the 2016 "Law Day"
theme, Miranda: More than Words, underscores the procedural
protections afforded to all of us by the Constitution of the
United States, how these rights are safeguarded by the courts
and why the preservation of these principles is essential to our
liberty; and

WHEREAS, The Miranda Warning has become ingrained in law
enforcement and has permeated popular consciousness through
countless recitations in films and television shows; and
WHEREAS, Miranda is only part of the story when it comes to
the procedures for ensuring justice; and
WHEREAS, The American Bar Association has provided additional
information on the importance of this landmark case on its
website www.americanbar.org; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize May 1, 2016, as "Law Day"
in Pennsylvania to celebrate the role of law in our society and
to cultivate a deeper understanding of the legal profession.
